Ravenstone takes its name from a beautiful old manor estate in Melmerby, near Penrith, in the Lake District.
It was a place my mum had spent years restoring, with a vision of creating somewhere people could come to rest, recuperate and feel cared for.
She imagined a haven for wellbeing, bringing together nature, animals, recovery and a genuine desire to help people.
We were making plans to develop that vision together.
But life took us in a different direction.

My mum was diagnosed with advanced oesophageal-gastric cancer.
I moved into Ravenstone and spent six of the final seven months of her life there.
The wellness destination we had imagined together never became a reality, but that experience changed the way I thought about health.
For years before her diagnosis, Mum had experienced subtle changes in how she felt. Individually, those changes had been investigated and explained.
Looking back, I began wondering about the bigger picture.
Not whether her illness could necessarily have been diagnosed earlier, because I will never know that.
But why we so often wait until something is recognisably wrong before we start paying closer attention to our health.
That question stayed with me.

That question stayed with me.

I’d spent more than 30 years working in diagnostic radiography, identifying injury, disease and pathology.
But I’d always been interested in the person beyond the image.
Their history, their lifestyle, the changes they’d noticed and how everything might connect.
Mum’s illness brought that instinct into sharper focus.
What if we paid more attention to our health before a diagnosis?
Not everything can be predicted or prevented. But there are areas where understanding our starting point gives us an opportunity to make meaningful changes.
Bone health is one of them.
Bone loss can develop silently over many years, often without symptoms until a fracture occurs.
Yet bone is living tissue, continually responding to movement, nutrition, hormones and other influences.
Understanding what’s happening earlier gives us an opportunity to act.

Ravenstone Wellness grew from that thinking.
Today, we bring together specialist bone health assessments, targeted health testing and personalised support around nutrition, strength, movement and lifestyle.
Because a scan result shouldn’t be the end of the conversation.
It should be the beginning of understanding what we can influence next.
Our approach is simple:
Measure. Understand. Act. Re-measure.
We don’t just want stronger bones.
We want a stronger person around them.

My mum wanted Ravenstone to become somewhere people could come for support, recovery and wellbeing.
Although the original estate is no longer part of our lives, the purpose behind it remains.
Today, Ravenstone Wellness is growing into something neither of us could have imagined, with the next generation of our family bringing their own interests and expertise in sports science, strength and healthy ageing.
And while the business may continue to evolve, the reason behind it won’t.
“I eventually realised I didn’t need to inherit Mum’s blueprint. I could inherit her purpose.
She wanted Ravenstone to help people. So did I.
I simply had to find my own way of doing it.”
