This is not just a bone density scan. It is early insight into your bone strength, your bone quality and your future risk, using radiation free REMS Echolight technology.

Strength, mobility and independence are not things you either keep or lose. They are things you can measure, and then do something about.

The part nobody mentions

0%

of fragility fractures happen to people who do not have osteoporosis.

Their standard scan came back normal because it measured density alone. REMS measures density and bone quality, which is the half that gets missed.

Bone loss does not start on the day you are diagnosed. It develops quietly, over years, while everything feels fine.

You can see your skin change. You can feel your strength drop and your joints stiffen. Bone gives you nothing to notice.

And it does not happen in isolation. Bone, muscle and joints hold each other up, and what affects one tends to affect the others.

A standard scan measures one thing.

It tells you how much bone you have. It cannot tell you how well that bone is built. Two people can carry identical bone density and face completely different odds of breaking something.

density + quality = your real fracture risk

The underlined half is the half a standard scan leaves out. REMS measures both, in one appointment.

Sound waves, not X-rays.

REMS stands for Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry. We use the REMS Echolight system, an ultrasound scan of your hip and spine.

As the sound passes through bone it comes back carrying a signal. REMS reads that signal against a clinical database of real people, including those who went on to fracture. That is where the quality reading comes from.

No X-rays. No radiation. No injections. Nothing to swallow.

Three numbers and a plan.

1.

Your bone density

T-score and Z-score, the same measures your GP works from. Your results show whether you sit in the normal, osteopenic or osteoporotic range.

2.

Your bone quality

Scored from 0 to 100. This is the part a standard density scan cannot see.

3.

Your fracture risk

What your bones mean for the years ahead, explained in plain English, in the context of your own history rather than as a score on its own.

Your Early Insight Assessment.

1.

Discovery

Your history, your medication, your training, your hormones, what you want from the next twenty years.

2.

Scan

You lie down and the probe does the work. Nothing invasive, nothing uncomfortable, 20 to 30 minutes. Comfortable two piece clothing is ideal, since we need access to the lower back and hip.

3.

Explanation

We talk your results through in the context of your wider bone health, lifestyle, recovery, movement and risk factors, rather than handing you a score. Your full reports follow within 48 hours, shared securely to your email address for you to download and keep.

4.

Tracked

Come back in six months and we can show you whether it is moving.

Appointments are available at Summerhill Health in Hale and at community screening appointments in Bolton. The scanner is portable, so we also run Bone Health Screening Days and specialist events across the UK.

Why we use REMS.

A DEXA scan carries a wide margin of error. The manufacturers put it at 2 to 3%. The published literature puts it nearer 5 to 6% in either direction. So a good year of training, nutrition and supplementation might move you 2%, and on a standard scan that cannot be told apart from noise. On a standard scan it can take two to four years and several appointments to prove your plan is working. REMS has a tighter margin, which is why we can rescan every six months.

No radiation

REMS uses ultrasound rather than X-rays, so there is no ionising radiation. That makes it suitable for repeat monitoring, and for people who should not have repeated X-rays.

Rescan every 6 months, not every 2 years

Close enough together to see whether what you are doing is working, while you can still change it.

It works around real bodies

Metal work, screws and plates, arthritis, scoliosis, calcification and old fractures all distort a standard reading. REMS filters them out.

FAQs

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly. If your GP, consultant or another clinician has advised a bone density scan, you are welcome to bring any relevant information with you.

How long does the appointment take?

The scan itself takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Most appointments are booked as a longer Early Insight Assessment, so please allow 60 minutes.

Is it radiation free?

Yes. REMS uses advanced ultrasound rather than X-rays. There is no ionising radiation, which makes it suitable for repeat monitoring.

Does it hurt?

No. It feels exactly like a pregnancy scan. Gel on the skin and a handheld scanner moved over the area.

Is this the same as a DEXA scan?

No. A REMS scan is an ultrasound based assessment covering bone density, bone quality and fracture risk, rather than density alone. It complements traditional pathways and can support earlier, better informed decisions. For some people we will still recommend a DEXA. The two work well side by side.

Can the scan show osteoporosis or osteopenia risk?

Yes. Your results can indicate whether your bone health falls within normal, osteopenic or osteoporotic ranges, with bone quality and fracture risk on top of that.

When will I get my results?

We talk them through with you at your appointment. Your full reports follow within 48 hours, shared securely to your email address. You download and keep the PDFs, so they are yours rather than sitting behind a login.

Where is the scan carried out?

At Summerhill Health in Hale, at community screening appointments and events in Bolton, and at screening days with our partners across the UK.

What should I wear?

Something comfortable. We scan through your tummy and at your hip, so a two piece outfit is ideal. Nothing needs to come off beyond lifting or lowering what is already loose.

How often should I scan?

Every six months while you are actively working on your bone health. Once a year otherwise.
